St Joseph's Medical Center provides training, in association and cooperation with its affiliated participating intuitions, in Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs that meet the standards established by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and each specialties Residency Review Committees (RRC). Residents are taught and evaluated according to the six (6) core competencies established by the ACGME:

  • Residents will report to the program specific Program Director. This position is responsible for participation in all of the educational and clinical activities of the St Joseph's Residency Program(s) on a daily basis. This includes cooperation with all educational elements of the teaching program as well as providing clinical services to program patients within the St. Joseph's Medical Center and other approved clinical and training facilities. Completion of the training qualifies the participant for certification by a specialty board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).

    Residents will perform professional medical duties while undergoing advanced professional training, under the general supervision of teaching faculty and community physicians at St Joseph's Medical Center and other participating sites. Residents must meet required deadlines as set by the residency program, ACGME and the Medical board of California. Residents are expected to perform all procedures within the scope of training and to seek supervision when additional training is needed. Residents should function effectively as a member of any and all teams involved in patient care or educational activities. Residents are to use good clinical judgement as learning progresses seeking immediate consultation and supervision when uncertain regarding any patient care concerns.

    Residents must complete all patient care documents in an accurate and timely manner as required by St. Joseph's Medical Center, Residency program management and other participating sites.

    Attends all teaching and learning conferences to improve clinical skills and medical knowledge, participates fully in the educational and scholarly activities of the program and, as required, assume responsibility for teaching and supervising other residents and students. Provides peer support and engages in teaching opportunities as needed by junior peers. Residents are expected to participate in and complete scholarly activities to enhance education, log procedures as required, completing evaluations and also reporting duty hours. Completes and adheres to all compliance and safety training as directed by St. Joseph's Medical Center, California Medical Board, ACGME, participating sites and other outside surveying agencies. Residents will participate in appropriate institutional committees and councils whose actions affect their education and/or patient care including, but not limited to quality assurance and quality improvement activities.

    Also, Residents will serve as an active member of a hospital committee as assigned by the Residency Program Leadership. Residents must abide by all SJMC Hospital policies and procedures,
    including the provisions of the GME Policy and Procedure Manual, the residency training programs and the regulations of any affiliated institution to which the resident may be assigned.

    Certified in BLS, ACLS, PALS and NRP within the first month of training.
