The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine seeks a MEDICAL TOXICOLOGY Boarded or Board-eligible Emergency Medicine Physician for a tenure-eligible or tenure-ineligible position to serve as Faculty in the Department of Emergency Medicine.

This individual will have the opportunity to engage in collaborative work with fellow medical toxicologists on a global level under the division leadership of Dr. Christopher Holstege. This position will have clinical, teaching, research, leadership, and mentorship roles in association with the UVA Health's Blue Ridge Poison Center, the Medical Toxicology elective student and resident rotations, the ACGME approved Medical Toxicology Fellowship program, and other services. This position will collaborate with others, including, but not limited to, highly achieved clinical toxicologists, epidemiologists, emergency physicians, and administrative/research support teams. This position is considered core faculty in the Division of Medical Toxicology and the Department of Emergency Medicine. This position will be integrally involved in educational services, including web-based learning, teleconferencing to rural medically under-served regions, professional lectures to UVA and non-UVa Health Care facilities.

This position will include protected time to support medical toxicology obligations and scholarly pursuits based on a prior sustained record of achievement. This position carries a faculty appointment in the University of Virginia School of Medicine with clinical obligations with the Emergency Department in UVA Health. This position will be required to provide coverage for medical toxicology calls on a rotating basis as well as scheduled clinical coverage within the department of emergency medicine.

The Department of Emergency Medicine is led by Robert O'Connor, MD, MPH, and includes adult and pediatric care, with active air and ground transport programs. There is an established ACGME emergency medicine residency program with 12 residents per year, well-established ACGME fellowships in Medical Toxicology and EMS, and additional fellowships in Advanced Ultrasonography, Cardiovascular Emergencies, Research, Administration, and Medical Education.

The UVA Health System is a 700-bed tertiary care and Level 1 trauma center with an annual ED census of 70,000 located at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Charlottesville, Virginia. UVA Health System includes defined Intensive Care Units for neonatal, pediatric, and adult patient populations.
  • Clinical Activities - Faculty serve as attending physicians within the UVA emergency department. Completion of residency training in emergency medicine with a medical toxicology fellowship and board-eligibility/certification will be required.
  • Teaching Activities - Teaching encompasses all activities that directly facilitate student/resident/fellow learning, including the contact hours spent in the classroom, office hours, class preparation, answering email, student/trainee advising/evaluations, creating available course materials, and related duties.
  • Research - The research component normally includes scholarly publication, attending academic conferences and obtaining grants. More senior scholars often take leadership roles in scholarly associations and act as editors, board members and referees for grant-giving organizations, academic presses and scholarly journals.
  • Service - University service involves membership in departmental, college-level and university committees, attending departmental meetings, student recruitment and processing routine paperwork such as filling out reports, answering email, participating in surveys and voting in university elections.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Qualified candidates must have an MD or DO and residency trained in Emergency Medicine and fellowship trained in Medical Toxicology, as well as being board-certified or board-eligible for both Emergency Medicine and Medical Toxicology.
