This vacancy is located at the Fort Belvoir Community Hospital (FBCH) Dept. of Emergency Medicine, Fort Belvoir, VA.
We are looking for an Emergency Medicine physician to support the second largest military Hospital in the National Capital Region, treating a beneficiary population of almost 100,000 active duty, retired and dependent patients. Located in beautiful Northern Virginia, approximately 30 minutes from the nations capital, Washington D.C. As an Emergency Medicine Physician at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital your major responsibilities will include treating patients with life-threatening illnesses, establishing effective patient care plans, and referring patients to the appropriate specialists. The Physician should work cooperatively and supportively with the members of the medical staff to provide emergency services for all patients who present to the emergency department. Opportunities to sit on varying committees are available, but not required. Additional roles and responsibilities include the teaching and training of medics, medical students, interns/residents, and Tri-service physician assistant students. The department is staffed by board certified Emergency Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and Physician Assistant's and sees roughly 45,000 patients a year. All major services are available for consultation with 24 hour in house radiology (X-ray, CT, US). The ideal candidate should be board certified in Emergency Medicine and must have knowledge of modern management principles, practices, and methods. The applicant should have excellent interpersonal skills in handling interactions with hospital staff, other departments, as well as patients and their families. Fort Belvoir is located in the heart of the DC/VA/MD area and has a modern hospital with wonderful, supportive staff and ample parking. It is surrounded by some of the best school systems in the USA and is family friendly with plenty of things to do and places to see.

Provides services of an Emergency Medicine Physician to patients in the Emergency Department, serving as the senior staff officer while on duty in the Emergency Department. Responsible for resuscitation and stabilization of both trauma and medical patients. Covers the full range of cases and the immediate initial recognition, evaluation, care and disposition of patients in response to acute illness and injury. Triages, examines, diagnoses, resuscitates, stabilizes, treats or directs a course of treatment for a wide range of emergent patients from the pediatric to the geriatric patient; from seriously ill to the severely traumatized. Examines patients and orders appropriate tests to evaluate patient's chief, and related complaints; ascertains medical needs and initiates action to provide needed services.
Coordinates admission of patient to hospital with accepting staff physician. Performs authorized emergency procedures to include but not limited to laceration repair, central venous line emplacement, pacemaker placement, tube thoracostomy, thoracotomy, cricothyrotomy, cardioversion, defibrillation, peritoneal lavage, bladder aspiration, lumbar puncture, arterial line placement, reduction of dislocations/fractures, tracheal intubation, and wound debridement. Responds to and provides support to in-house cardiopulmonary arrests (echo-medic). Provides professional guidance and direction to physician assistants, Nurse Practitioners and physician assistant students working in the Emergency Department. Provides professional direction and guidance to ambulance section. Records all medical data on prescribed forms and completes necessary administrative functions.
Participates in and completes administrative tasks as assigned by the Chief, Emergency Department to include, but not limited to, Military Health System (MHS) Learn Training, Quality Improvement/Quality Assurance (QI/OA), monthly departmental staff meetings, risk management, credentialing, and Operations & Training committees and other areas of responsibility as assigned by the Chief, Emergency Department. Performs peer reviews.
Performs other duties as assigned.

• If selected, official college or university transcript must be submitted.
• Must provide documents for credentialing for health care positions.
• Must be board certified, have a permanent, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico or a territory of the U.S.
• All Health Care Providers must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) Training and certification. Current Advanced Life Support of other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
Residency Training for GP-15 Position: Applicants must have successfully completed the required accredited residency training in the specialty of the position to be filled (Emergency Medicine) and equivalent experience and training equal to at least 5 years. Experience may not be substituted for residency training that is required for the specialty identified.
