Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs, Department of Emergency Medicine

Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs, Department of Emergency Medicine (“Vice Chair”).

Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) has a rich and storied history. WUSM was established in 1891 when St. Louis Medical College became the Medical Department of Washington University. In 1899, the Missouri Medical College, which had been in operation since 1840, joined the Medical Department, uniting the two oldest medical schools west of the Mississippi River. In 1910, the school entered into an agreement with Barnes Hospital and St. Louis Hospital to allow students into wards as clinical clerks. This agreement gave the school the opportunity to conduct clinical research and appoint staff members at both hospitals. The early partnerships, at the turn of the 20th century, between the School of Medicine and Barnes Hospital laid the foundation on which Washington University School of Medicine is built today. With a strong commitment to the to the tripartite mission, WUSM is ranked No. 11 for Research by U.S. News & World Report and boasts the fifth largest faculty practice group in the country with 1,685 physicians representing 78 specialties and subspecialties in medicine and surgery. WUSM faculty members received over $748.9 million in research grant funding in fiscal year 2020.

Integral to the success of WUSM is the Department of Emergency Medicine, a critical component within the continuum of care and a provider of essential services to the community. With new Departmental status in February of 2021, the Department continues to grow and seeks to recruit an experienced Emergency Medicine Physician for the position of Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs (“Vice Chair”). The Vice Chair will be the clinician-leader for the Department and will have oversight of clinical operations at all clinical sites. The Vice Chair will be instrumental to achieving the Department’s goals of effectively and efficiently caring for patients, supporting faculty members’ clinical practice, engaging and influencing clinical partners, and executing clinical strategic goals. The candidate should be an expert in cutting edge leadership, management, and operations principles, and be knowledgeable about public policy, finance and billing, and regulations as they affect clinical operations. The Vice Chair should also have strong quantitative skills and proven proficiency in analyzing data to optimize performance. Reporting to the Chair, the Vice Chair will lead the development and implementation of process improvements and standardization of clinical practice at multiple clinical sites. Additionally, the Vice Chair will be vital in maintaining and growing the clinical mission of the Department and nurturing and maintaining productive relationships at the School of Medicine and BJC HealthCare.
